In the UK, by six months only 34% of babies get any breastmilk at all. In Norway it's 71%. By a baby's first birthday the British figure collapses to around half of one per cent — and the last time this country surveyed how it feeds its babies was 2010. On its own youngest citizens, the government is flying blind. In this twelfth episode of Restoring Britain's Health, Anwer Jan takes apart the baby food aisle: two corporations controlling 85% of the formula market, a regulatory vacuum that hasn't been updated since 2003, and a labelling architecture built to reassure rather than inform. This episode covers: The breastfeeding collapse: 73% of UK mothers start, just 34% are still going at six months, exclusive breastfeeding under 1% — not a cultural quirk but a policy outcome, with a fix UNICEF says would save the NHS up to £50m a year They are all the same: every infant formula sold in the UK must meet identical legal nutritional standards, so the gap between a 13p-per-100ml tin and a 35p one is branding, not milk — and switching can save a family £300–£540 in a baby's first year How they hook you: hospitals supplied cheaply so the first brand becomes the lifelong brand, prices up by as much as a third in two years, hundreds of millions paid to shareholders, and formula tins security-tagged because desperate parents were stealing them The Baby Killer: the 1974 report, the longest-running consumer boycott in history, and the estimated 212,000 excess infant deaths a year at the 1981 peak that produced the WHO Code — which the UK has still never fully written into law The loophole that breaks the ban: follow-on formula advertised freely in branding identical to the banned first-stage milk, and a 2025 study where not one of 57 labels complied with the rules on idealising images Heavy metals: 60%+ of baby foods carry lead, cadmium or arsenic — and 94% of homemade purees too, because it's in the soil and water; California now mandates monthly testing, the UK requires none The sugar in the pouch: 89% of fruit products should carry a high-sugar warning, some pouches hold more sugar than cola, and "no added sugar" can mean 80% fruit sugar — while tooth decay is the top cause of child hospital admissions Nestlé's double standard: Cerelac sold sugar-free in Britain and loaded with sugar in lower-income countries — and the January 2026 contamination recall across 60 countries that the public wasn't told about for weeks What Scandinavia chose: Sweden's 98% breastfeeding initiation built on 480 days of leave and free lactation support — and the proof it's policy not fate, with Scotland scoring 66 on the WHO Code to England's 44 Every claim is sourced from peer-reviewed research, government data, regulatory filings and the industry's own disclosures. This is not an attack on parents who formula feed. Most who do were failed by a system that gave them too little support, or had no real choice. The failure here is systemic — the corporations, the regulators and the politicians who look away. This is not a lifestyle podcast. This is an investigation.
