『走馬瀨』地名的由來，有三種說法：一是從平埔族語音譯，本地原為西拉雅平埔族的故居地；二為其地理面貌，由於位於曾文溪與大埔溪及後堀溪交會處，昔日溪水充沛，急流衝擊鄰近丘陵地區，激起壯觀水勢如萬馬奔走，因此得名；第三個說法來自於歷史典故，相傳荷蘭人統治台灣時期，引進馬匹供當地之平埔族耕作役用，但平埔族人不善耕役多放生任馬匹繁殖進而危害作物，荷蘭人乃將馬匹集中放牧於大武壠一處，因此命名走馬瀨。走馬瀨農場位曾文溪上游河谷台地，有一百二十公頃，農場內設施多樣，分以一般遊憩、果園遊憩、牧場遊憩三大系統，從騎馬、滑草、射箭、到人體動力的協力車、單車、山訓場等都有；水上遊樂的腳踏船、碰碰船、體能訓練場、高爾夫迷你推桿場、跑馬場及露營烤肉區以及大型滑水道的戲水世界等，適合各種不同年齡層的休閒遊樂需求。其中的八十公頃是熱帶草原；春、夏、秋季綠草如茵，冬日淡黃爍金。在西側月世界山形的襯托之下，有紐西蘭的溫帶風味，又有夏威夷熱帶風情，農場由台南縣農會經營，於民國七十七年開幕，為全國十大標章風景遊樂區。
