Watch the latest clips here: https://www.youtube.com/@hereticsclips/videos Richard Dawkins has shared stages with some of the greatest intellectuals of his generation, but one man stands above the rest. Speaking to Andrew Gold on Heretics, Dawkins reflects on his late friend Christopher Hitchens and describes him as the greatest orator he ever heard. Hitchens became famous for an almost unmatched ability to argue in real time. Whether debating religion, politics, war or morality, he could produce devastating responses seemingly without hesitation. Dawkins remembers watching that extraordinary mind at work and explains what made Hitchens so compelling, both intellectually and personally. The two men became closely associated through the New Atheism movement alongside Sam Harris and Daniel Dennett, earning the informal label of the ""Four Horsemen"". But Dawkins' memories reveal why Hitchens was never simply another atheist intellectual. His command of history and literature, astonishing memory and ability to construct an argument made him one of the most distinctive public speakers of his era. Andrew asks what Hitchens was actually like away from the debate stage. Behind the legendary confrontations and viral exchanges was a friendship between two men who shared many convictions but were far from identical. Dawkins reflects on Hitchens' personality, intelligence and remarkable ability to captivate a room. There was also something almost impossible to reproduce about the way Hitchens spoke. He could be funny, combative, literary and ruthless within the same answer. Was that ability something he carefully developed, or was Christopher Hitchens simply blessed with a mind capable of making connections faster than almost anyone around him? His death in 2011 also left an enormous gap in public intellectual life. More than a decade later, clips of his debates continue to attract millions of views, introducing entirely new generations to his arguments about God, religion and freedom of expression. Dawkins has spent his own life making the case for atheism and scientific reason, yet when discussing Hitchens there is unmistakable admiration for a talent even he believes was exceptional. What made Christopher Hitchens such a formidable speaker, and will we ever see another public intellectual quite like him?
