My cover of Garth Brooks' folk ballad, Ireland. I don't normally listen to a huge amount of country music (a little ironic, given how the genre evolved directly out of Irish and Scottish folk music, which is the majority of what I sing), but this is one of those songs that really jumped out at me back when it first came out, and wanted to be learned and sung. It had kind of faded out of my repertoire for a number of years, but when it was recently suggested to me as something for the channel, I realized that I still remembered most of the words, and it wound up being very quick to relearn. One quick note about the lyrics; in the final verse, there's a bit of grammatical weirdness in the second line. For a long time, I thought that Garth Brooks meant "ford the dark and fear" (which was how I recorded it here), and whenever I sang it, I pictured a group of soldiers trying to sneak up on an enemy encampment by crossing a river in the dark of night. In rereading the lyrics, I find that I'm actually surprised that there's no river mentioned in the song, given how strong that bit of mental imagery has always been for me. On further reflection, I think that he may actually have meant "forge through dark and fear". Either way, it's a very powerful and poignant verse. On a technical note, this is the first video that I've recorded after upgrading to a new webcam, the Logitech c920. I am *loving* this new cam! Even though I accidentally still had the settings to be recording in 720p on this first vid, I think the quality is a noticeable improvement over the videos that I've been doing up until now. Everything I'm posting after this video should be properly set in 1020p format. If you enjoy my music, please visit my Patreon page and consider becoming a patron of the arts!
