THE MISSION (1986) Robert De Niro; Jeremy Irons; Liam Neeson "Gabriel's Oboe" is the main theme for the 1986 film The Mission directed by Roland Joffé.The theme was written by Italian composer Ennio Morricone, and has since been arranged and performed several times by artists such as André Rieu, Yo-Yo Ma, Holly Gornik, and Brynjar Hoff, among others. The soundtrack for the film was very well received amongst critics, being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score and earning Morricone the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score. In the film, the theme is most prominently used when the protagonist, the Jesuit Father Gabriel, walks up to a waterfall and starts playing his oboe, aiming to befriend the natives with his music so he can carry his missionary work in the New World. The Guaraní tribesmen, who have been stalking him from a distance, approach Gabriel for the first time, puzzled by the sounds of the unknown instrument. The chief of the tribe, however, is displeased by this, and breaks Gabriel's oboe. This marks the beginning of the relationship between Father Gabriel and the Guaraní natives. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Palme d'Or 1986. · Roland Joffé Academy Award for Best Cinematography 1987. · Chris Menges Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score 1987. · Ennio Morricone BAFTA Award for Best Film Music 1987. · Ennio Morricone BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role 1987. · Ray McAnally David di Donatello for Best Foreign Producer 1987. · David Puttnam, Fernando Ghia BAFTA Award for Best Editing 1987. · Jim Clark For concert dates and tickets visit: http://www.andrerieu.com - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Subscribe to André Rieu's YouTube channel at: http://smarturl.it/5ubscribe Or follow André Rieu at: http://www.facebook.com/andrerieu http://www.twitter.com/andrerieu https://plus.google.com/+andrerieu - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - All photos, stills, clips and music are copyrighted to their respective owners.
