One of the most dangerous things you can do is a hair straightening treatment, and countries around the world are banning them... There are two chemicals used for hair straightening procedures like keratin... and let’s evaluate what has been found for both of them, and a stand that all of US, Europe, Canada, and even India have taken... 1/ The first chemical, most commonly used is formaldehyde... which is a known carcinogen, and is not allowed in cosmetic treatments across Europe because it releases compounds when heated that can cause cancer... Such that it is banned in Europe, and Canada allows no more than 0.01% formaldehyde in such heat treated straightening products... This year, India also banned the import of a Keratin Hair Straightening product that had close to 10% formaldehyde... 2/ Now because there has been a lot of education around formaldehyde... the formaldehyde-free products that have come use Glyoxyclic Acid... which has now been found to cause acute kidney injury... Israel has banned it and France has advised against it... So even if you pay a premium for formaldehyde free treatment, that in itself is harmful... Currently, other alternatives to these two chemicals have also not been found to be safe... And this is where comes in the opportunity in 3 steps... The first two are already happening, and you’ll the third is a gap for someone to fill... a) Launch of curly hair based products, which has already started happening in the market to take styling away from straightening to wavy and curls... like Moxie and Fix My Curls... b) A large developing market for hair patches that women can wear while going to parties without having to straighten... like Nish Hair... c) And the gap in the third where true innovation lies in searching for an organic ingredient to solve for hair straightening in collaboration with factories in Korea, and bringing it to India...
