Experience a comprehensive, upscaled, restored, and colorized historical record capturing the operational and scientific scope of the Second World War from 1943 to 1944, moving from the jungles of the Solomon Islands and the coral reefs of the Central Pacific to the laboratories of Wright Field and the beaches of Normandy. The narrative begins with the campaign for Bougainville, where pre-invasion strikes preceded the November 1, 1943 amphibious assault at Cape Torokina by the 3rd Marine Division, followed by the 37th Division. Amid Japanese air raids that ignited fuel dumps, frontline medics treated casualties in subterranean field hospitals while Seabees constructed two fighter strips and one bomber runway. Supported by C-47 cargo deliveries, American forces repelled the fanatical March 1944 counteroffensive launched by General Kanda’s Japanese 6th Division. Next, the film examines how the American aircraft carrier breached Japan’s oceanic perimeter across the Gilberts, Marshalls, and Marianas. Viewers witness the precision of carrier aviation—from LSOs directing approaches into arresting wires to deck crews dodging spinning propellers and barrier crashes. At Tarawa in November 1943, despite 1,000 carrier sorties and 3,000 tons of naval bombardment, low water over the reef forced Marines to cross 1,000 yards of surf under intense fire. To neutralize Japan’s Central Pacific supply hub without a ground invasion, carrier task forces next attacked Truk Lagoon, where rugged F6F Hellcats swept the skies of Zero fighters and dive bombers sent 200,000 tons of trapped enemy vessels to the bottom. Following scenes of LST convoys and rocket ships bombarding the Normandy coast, the documentary explores Wright Field, Ohio. Here, Materiel Division engineers and test pilots bridged the gap between the 1923 XNBL-1 Barling Bomber and the B-29 Superfortress. Rare sequences reveal aerial camera labs, propeller test cells spinning blades at 4,000 RPM, a B-17 cruising with two engines feathered, the XP-62 fighter, fuselage load-to-failure tests, full-scale crash-fire impact studies, rapid decompression chambers, radio-controlled target gliders, Sgt. Bose’s delayed free-fall parachute jump, and early de Bothezat and Sikorsky R-4, R-5, and R-6 helicopters. The reel concludes with General Hap Arnold, AT-6 training at Randolph Field, Eighth Air Force P-47, P-38, P-51, B-24, B-25, B-26, and B-17 missions, and Allied troops advancing through Bayeux and Sainte-Mère-Église.
