Growing a baby takes up a LOT of room. 🤰 So where do mom's stomach, intestines, bladder and lungs go? In this cartoon, every organ moves, squeezes or works overtime as the uterus grows from the size of a pear all the way up to the ribs. ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 Every organ makes room 0:11 Before pregnancy: the team 0:27 1st trimester: busy kidneys, busy bladder 0:43 ~20 weeks: the uterus reaches the belly button 1:00 The heart works overtime 1:13 3rd trimester: why heartburn happens 1:33 Even the lungs feel it 1:51 The squashed bladder 1:55 After birth: every organ slides home 🔬 The real science in this video • Before pregnancy, the uterus is about the size of a pear, low in the pelvis, with the bladder in front and the intestines above. • Early in pregnancy, the kidneys filter up to about 50% more blood, which means more urine and more bathroom trips. • By about 20 weeks, the top of the uterus reaches the belly button. The intestines are pushed up and to the sides, and the appendix can move higher. • Pregnancy hormones slow the gut down, so roughly 1 in 3 pregnant women get constipated. • Blood volume rises by about 30–50%. The heart pumps up to half more blood every minute and beats faster. • Late in pregnancy, the uterus reaches the ribs and presses on the stomach, while progesterone relaxes the valve at the top of the stomach. That's why heartburn is so common: up to 80% of women get it in late pregnancy. • The diaphragm is pushed up about 4 cm. The rib cage widens to make up for it, and each breath moves about 30–50% more air. • The baby's head presses on the bladder near the end of pregnancy. • After birth, the uterus shrinks back over about 6 weeks, and the organs settle back into place. 📚 Sources Williams Obstetrics – maternal anatomical and physiological adaptations to pregnancy Cleveland Clinic – kidney changes during pregnancy (increased filtration) Vanagunas & Pandolfino, GLOWM – gastrointestinal changes in pregnancy (intestines, appendix, constipation) Cochrane Review – "Interventions for heartburn in pregnancy" Hudson, Lotto & Maxwell (LJMU) – cardiovascular adaptations to pregnancy LoMauro & Aliverti, Breathe (2015) – respiratory physiology of pregnancy Deranged Physiology – respiratory changes in pregnancy This video is for education and entertainment only, not medical advice.
