In this episode of The Ascend Podcast – Clean Energy Series, Geet Gera speaks with Dave Edlund, Co-Founder & CEO of Element 1, about the economics of hydrogen, data center power demand, EV charging, diesel replacement, methanol-to-hydrogen technology and the future of distributed energy. Dave has spent nearly four decades working in hydrogen and fuel-cell technology. His company, Element 1, is focused on solving one of hydrogen's biggest problems: Hydrogen isn't necessarily expensive to make—it is expensive to transport. Element 1's approach is to produce hydrogen on-site and on-demand, rather than manufacture it somewhere else, compress it and transport it by truck. In California, delivered hydrogen can cost around $30 per kilogram—and in some markets even more. A kilogram of hydrogen contains roughly the same energy as a gallon of diesel, making $30/kg hydrogen economically similar to paying $30 for a gallon of diesel. Dave argues that hydrogen needs to reach roughly $3–$5/kg at the point of use to become economically compelling. Dave explains that AI-driven data centers increasingly require tens of megawatts—and sometimes gigawatts—of power. In many locations, getting a grid connection can take years. Distributed hydrogen systems could potentially be deployed much faster and provide cleaner primary or backup electricity than diesel generators.
