The cockpit window is tilted sideways. Not angled slightly. Properly rotated, so the pilot sits in what is essentially a glass head-prison set at a diagonal, completely sealed off from the cabin behind. Flying it feels like the aircraft is permanently banking, because visually it is. It was also genuinely advanced for its time. Retractable landing gear with proper gear doors, which the 737 did not have decades later. Flaps that extend to sixty degrees, which is more than almost anything flying today. A seatbelt sign and a no smoking sign. And it was fast enough that the name Blitz, meaning lightning, was earned rather than marketing. The less good news is what it was made of. Parts of it used a magnesium alloy, which is a metal that burns. The aircraft had a reputation for catching fire. Lufthansa only operated it as an airliner for a few years before the fleet was handed over to the Luftwaffe, where it spent the rest of its service life doing rather different work. In this video I start it up, read the entirely German cockpit labelling, taxi it badly because the tail has a skid rather than a wheel, and take it to St Barth to find out what sixty degrees of flaps actually does. Spoiler: the landing was fine. Everything else was not.
