#BBCEye Investigations has been filming across the summer in Gaza as the ceasefire falters and bombardment continues, to reveal how children there are coping amid the near-total destruction of the infrastructure they rely on to survive. Click here to subscribe to our channel 👉🏽 https://bbc.in/3VyyriM Water must be collected by hand. Medicines are scarce, leading to avoidable suffering and untreated injuries. Food and even the means to cook it is prohibitively expensive. Sewage flows between overcrowded tent cities, while rats and weasels feed on the waste left behind. In the film we meet Lara al-Masri, a 14-year-old girl whose family say that father was shot and killed trying to get the family some food in 2025. Her grief sits close to the surface and tears come quickly when the family remembers their father. There are few opportunities for education in Gaza, with 97 per cent of schools and universities damaged or destroyed, while opportunities for entertainment are even more scarce. Playgrounds, sports facilities, cultural spaces and places where children might once have gathered have largely disappeared, leaving young people with few chances to play, socialise or escape the pressures of daily survival. According to UNICEF, nearly all children in Gaza require urgent mental health and psychosocial support. In hospitals, doctors and nurses try to help children recover from life-changing injuries without many of the medicines needed to fight their infections. Six-year-old Raseel al-Balawi has had more than twenty operations to physically clean the wounds following an Israeli airstrike on her tent in Al-Mawassi camp. The attack killed her nine-year-old sister, Rateel and now the antibiotics they have access to in Gaza are not working to heal Raseel. A new decade-long study by researchers in Gaza, shared with the BBC, indicates that there is "widespread" bacterial resistance to key antibiotics there. Israel’s authorities say they do not place limits on the importation of medicine and that the needs of the population, in terms of water, are being met. And yet we see birthday candles still being lit, treasured dolls being cuddled, moments of laughter among young people who dream of a future beyond the conflict. But this summer, with peace negotiations at a political deadlock, these families must continue trying to survive continued Israeli military attacks that have killed more than 100 people a month since April 2026 according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, whose figures are used as a trusted source by the United Nations. The IDF say they have no records of a strike at the time or location of the attack on Raseel’s family. Nor do they have information on the shooting of Lara’s father. They told the BBC it, "regrets any harm to civilians, and acts to minimise it to the greatest extent possible.”. 00:00 Gaza's Ceasefire Summer 01:17 Raseel remembers her sister Rateel 05:48 Gaza’s water crisis 06:26 Attack on a water desalination plant 07:01 Lara recalls her home in Beit Lahia 09:32 Raseel undergoes yet another procedure 11:50 Gaza’s rat and weasel problem 13:10 Amputations caused by rodent bites 16:30 The search for Gaza’s missing 18:23 Raseel’s procedure: the outcome 19:50 Attack on Lara’s school 21:36 Lara’s birthday 22:22 Raseel receives a doll and sees her mum 24:09 Israel responds to death toll data 🎥 Watch this film in ARABIC here: https://youtu.be/icUh5nwK3gE Credits: Filmed and Produced by Yousef al-Mashhawari Producer: Lina Shaikouni Assistant Producer: Wesam Abumareq Journalist: Paul Cusiac 🎞️ To watch more investigative journalism from our award-winning BBC Eye investigations team, check out this documentary playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4fa8LK1lptsvoA_spfJhzda 📽️ Watch BBC Arabic investigations here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLz_B0PFGIn4eYcZz_B4hdku76NOJjrJwl 📩 Do you have a serious story lead for BBC Eye Investigations?
