Eddie Hill spent forty four years rewriting what was possible in American drag racing. He started as a nitro burning Top Fuel pioneer in the 1960s, walked away from the sport dead broke, then became a four time world champion in drag boat racing before returning to N.H.R.A. Top Fuel at age forty nine. In April of 1988 he became the first driver in history to break into the four second zone, running a 4.990 second pass at Texas Motorplex that earned him the nickname the Four Father of drag racing. In 1993 he won the N.H.R.A. Winston Top Fuel World Championship at fifty seven years old, still the oldest champion in series history, racing his bright yellow Nuclear Banana Pennzoil dragster alongside his wife and business partner Ercie Hill and beating drivers like Joe Amato half his age. This documentary tells the real story of how that career actually ended in October of 1999, when a defective cast aluminum engine block that Hill later said should have been scrapped instead of sold to his team exploded at Houston Raceway Park and left him with a fractured L1 vertebra. We trace the full chain of events, from an earlier engine explosion the week before at the O'Reilly Fallnationals in Texas, through the Houston block failure itself, to what it meant for N.H.R.A. safety history and for a man who had already survived an engine fire, a near fatal drag boat crash at Firebird Lake, and a three hundred mile an hour wreck at the Sonoma Nationals. This is a deep dive into Top Fuel drag racing history, nitro engine failure, N.H.R.A. rule changes, and the end of one of the sport's most improbable comeback careers. #EddieHill #TopFuel #NHRA #DragRacing #DragRacingHistory #NitroRacing #TopFuelDragster #MotorsportsHistory #FourFather #NuclearBanana #NHRAHistory #DragRacingLegends
