Imagine a material that changes colour almost instantly when you press it! Scientists have developed a remarkable photonic hydrogel that switches colours in just 0.1 milliseconds—faster than the blink of an eye. Developed by Youfeng Yue and his team, this soft, water-rich material combines an elastic hydrogel with an ordered nanoscale structure. Unlike ordinary coloured materials that use pigments or dyes, it produces colour by reflecting specific wavelengths of light through a phenomenon called Bragg diffraction. When pressure is applied, the spacing between its internal reflective layers changes, instantly shifting the colour. Release the pressure, and the material returns to its original state. The results are impressive: it can tune colours across approximately 340–640 nanometres, detect pressures below 3 kilopascals, achieve spatial resolution of around 10 micrometres, and withstand more than 10,000 switching cycles without significant degradation. But why does this matter? This technology could lead to futuristic full-colour displays, ultra-sensitive stress sensors, and even new ways to study mechanical forces generated by living cells. The most fascinating part is that a simple squeeze can become a rapid, visible signal. Published in Nature Communications, this research demonstrates how nanoscale engineering can transform a soft hydrogel into a durable, ultrafast colour-changing material with exciting potential for future technologies.
