This huge foul tasting, smelly fish was believed to have gone extinct in the Late Cretaceous period over 66 million years ago. That was until in 1938 when a type of coelacanth was found off the coast of South Africa. Another was found in 1997 in an Indonesian Market followed by a live specimen a year later. Its discovery is considered to be the zoological find of the century. A living fossil from a lineage of fishes that was thought to have been extinct since the time of the dinosaurs. Coelacanths are different from all other living fishes and are the only living animals to have a fully functional intracranial joint, which is a division separating the ear and brain from the nasal organs and eye. This allows the front part of their head to be lifted when they are feeding. In addition it has paired fins which move in a similar fashion to human arms and legs.
