Date filmed: 24/02/2023 Videos filmed between 12:24 and 13:10 Route(s): East Coast Main Line (ECML) / Birmingham to Peterborough Line - Between Peterborough and Grantham / Stamford Stations Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barriers Crossing with CCTV (MCB-CCTV) Location: Maxey Road, Helpston This video features a selection of footage taken within the space of about 45 minutes at this very busy level crossing in Helpston where the line towards Leicester and Birmingham splits off from the very busy East Coast Main Line. This is one of only four public highway six-track level crossings on the National Rail network and is one of the longest in the country from end to end (measuring in at around 45 metres / 150 feet between each pair of barriers). There is also a ten-second timer separating the first pair of barriers reaching the lowered position and the second pair beginning to lower. For some rather odd reason, at the time of filming, the alarms seemed to be stuck in their 'night mode' setting and were much quieter than they should have been at that time of day (midday to mid-afternoon). Plenty of high-speed action is featured in this video, with a pair of light class 66 locomotives also making an appearance. A total of nineteen (19) different trains are seen in this video, six of which passed in a single lowering alone, with four of those passing within under a minute of each other. Enjoy!
