Hola todos, hello everyone, bonjour tout le monde! So I wanted to make a new video today and this one is titled: « FRENCH AND ENGLISH ARE BOTH DECLINING IN CANADA! » and here it goes. So as we all know by now, QuĂ©bec is the only province in Canada that has a French-speaking majority. Back in August of 2022, the media in QuĂ©bec announced that there was a decline of the French language in QuĂ©bec, or a « dĂ©clin du français ». And the QuĂ©bĂ©cois media has kept that narrative alive until now. And it wasn’t wrong, the numbers don’t lie, in the past Canadian census in May of 2021, there has been a decline in QuĂ©bec of the percentage of people who speak French as a first language, although they were still the overwhelming majority in QuĂ©bec. So the QuĂ©bec Premier François Legault and many other QuĂ©bec politicians these past few years have encouraged Quebecers to speak French and work to overturn the « decline » of the French language in QuĂ©bec. Others have been encouraging Quebecers to learn to speak English as a second language and be bilingual. Modern-day Quebecers are being pulled in different directions and it’s not clear what the end result of this will be. There is a Canadian census coming up in May of 2026 and a provincial election in October of 2026. We will see where the QuĂ©bec electorate stands in 2026. If we want the proof and see the official numbers that demonstrate that French is declining in QuĂ©bec, we just have to look at the numbers on the official website of « Statistics Canada/Statistique Canada » of the past few Canadian censuses. But we need to add a « nuance » as to what « declining » means. Because what declined is the percentage of people who speak French as a first language, while the sheer number of people who speak French qs a first language in QuĂ©bec has increased. So in 2011, 6 102 210 people (78.07%) in QuĂ©bec spoke French as a first language, in 2016, 6 219 665 people (77.10%) in QuĂ©bec spoke French as a first language, and in 2021, 6 291 440 people (74.83%) spoke French as a first language. So as I said, the percentage of people who speak French as a first language has declined, but the amount of people who speak French as a first language has increased in the past several Canadian censuses. But here’s the catch: what the Canadian media is not telling its audience, is that the English language is declining as well in Canada nationwide! With the stable influx of allophone immigrants in modern-day Canada, the amount of people who speak English as a first language has declined to almost a minority status as of this past 2021 Canadian census. Let’s look at the official numbers: In 2011, 18 858 980 people in Canada (56.94%) spoke English as a first language, in 2016, 19 460 850 people in Canada (55.97%) spoke English as a first language, and in 2021, 20 107 200 people in Canada (only 54.91%) spoke English as a first language. Now here are the official numbers for Allophones: In 2011, 6 567 680 people in Canada (19.83%) spoke Allophone languages, in 2016, 7 321 065 people in Canada (21.06%) spoke Allophone languages, and in 2021, 7 848 820 people in Canada (21.43%) spoke Allophone languages. So just like the French language in QuĂ©bec, the percentage of people who speak English as a first language has declined in Canada while the sheer number of Anglophones has increased. The majority of Canada will be Allophones eventually, if the numbers keep evolving the way they have been, and English and French will be minority languages in Canada. This is due to the high yearly influx of immigrants in Canada who speak Allophone languages and choose to make Canada their home. No big deal, language diversity is beautiful and deserves to be celebrated! Anglophones and francophones will still be fully part of Canada even as minority languages and will coexist peacefully with the new Allophone majority of Canada. At the end of the day, anglophone, francophone, or allophone, it doesn’t matter what language you speak, what matters is if you are a good person and do good things to the people around you.
