September in the UK is a critical turning point for self-sufficiency. While the summer harvests are coming in, true food security means looking ahead. In today's allotment vlog, I'm showing you why I am absolutely not taking any risks with next year's harvest. We are cleaning out the chicken coop and moving our homegrown chicken manure straight onto the allotment beds. With everything going on in the world right now—from unpredictable extreme weather patterns and supply chain fragility to the skyrocketing cost of supermarket food and commercial chemical fertilizers—we simply cannot rely on the shops for our long-term food security. Taking control of what we can grow right here at home isn't panic; it's practical common sense. Why Homegrown Chicken Manure is a Total Must-Have:Commercial fertilizers are rising in price and often strip the life out of the earth. In contrast, well-rotted chicken manure is an absolute superpower for your soil. It is incredibly rich in Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K)—the three vital building blocks plants need to thrive. By top-dressing our empty beds right now, we are letting the winter rains wash those concentrated nutrients deep into the root zone. This isn't just waste management; it's a complete, zero-waste, closed-loop system. The allotment fed the chickens, the chickens feed the soil, and the soil will feed us next winter. We are prepping these specific beds for our overwintering onion sets and heavy spring feeders. If you want a guaranteed harvest next year, the insurance policy starts in the soil today. #UKAllotment #SelfSufficiency #ChickenManure #FoodSecurity #PreppingUK #GrowYourOwnFood #HomesteadingUK #ZeroWaste #VegetableGarden #PantryPrepping 🥚Simple pickled egg recipe : Boil and shell your eggs. For the pickling brine I used A few black pepper corns A spring of thyme A teaspoon of salt And a few cups of 5% vinegar and heated for a minute or so to infuse and dissolve the salt. Add warm eggs to sterilised jars, Cover with warm pickling brine including the peppercorns, thyme etc Seal and leave to cool before refrigerating or cupboard storing.
