China’s mountain highways in Guizhou cross terrain where the ground can disappear hundreds of meters beneath the roadway. In this engineering documentary, we follow the construction logic behind the province’s extraordinary bridge-and-tunnel network, focusing on the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge — a massive steel-truss suspension bridge carrying an expressway roughly 625 meters, or more than 2,000 feet, above the river below. The video follows the construction process from mountain foundations and giant bridge towers to temporary catwalks, 217-strand main cables, 91 pairs of hangers, precision steel fabrication, 93 major steel-truss sections, smart cable-hoist erection, the final structural closure, deck construction, wind monitoring and full-scale vehicle load testing. We also look at how bridges such as Beipanjiang and Pingtang illustrate the different structural solutions engineers use across Guizhou’s mountainous terrain. Before the Huajiang bridge opened to traffic, engineers progressively tested it with 18, 48 and finally 96 heavy trucks, representing approximately 3,360 metric tons of controlled vehicle load.
