Your phone may be showing you a completely different India from the one someone else sees. We live in the same country, share the same public institutions and participate in the same democracy, yet our social media feeds can create very different political realities. In this video, we explore how algorithms, personalized recommendations, and artificial intelligence are changing the way Indians consume political information. From unemployment and nationalism to religion, caste and corruption, digital platforms increasingly shape which issues we notice, which voices we hear and which arguments we never encounter. Democracy is about more than casting a vote every five years. It also depends on how citizens understand public issues, evaluate evidence, engage with disagreement, and recognize the democratic rights of people who think differently. But when platforms optimize for engagement, emotionally charged content can dominate our feeds, reinforcing existing beliefs and making opposing viewpoints appear unreasonable or even absurd. We also examine the difference between being a citizen and being an audience. The internet has democratized information, allowing independent journalists, marginalized communities, and ordinary citizens to reach millions. At the same time, algorithmic recommendations and AI-generated political messages raise important questions about personalization, persuasion and our ability to maintain a shared understanding of reality. The solution is not simply to shut down social media or reject AI. We need to question what we consume, check original sources, seek context, engage with opposing arguments, and stay willing to revise our views as the evidence changes. The most important democratic skill may not be voting alone, but learning to step outside our own information bubbles. Are you making an effort to step outside your information universe, or are you becoming just another audience member?
