FORBIDDEN VENEZUELA | The Deadly Jungle Where Animals No One Knows Live | Wildlife Documentary Venezuela is a country where the same land is two opposite worlds depending on the month, and where animals most of the planet has never heard of still survive — and in this Wild Dominion documentary we cross the whole of it, from the flooding plains to the flat-topped mountains, all the way to a river giant almost no one knows exists. On the Llanos we meet the water-hunting jaguar that stalks caimans submerged; the electric eel that killed horses in front of Alexander von Humboldt in eighteen hundred, an account science doubted for two centuries until it proved true; the green anaconda, whose true world capital is this plain, waiting in the last puddle of the dry season alongside the piranha the country calls caribe and the capybara that feeds everything with teeth. Along the Orinoco swim the flexible-necked pink dolphin and the pack-hunting giant otter, and in the southern jungle waits the bushmaster, the longest venomous snake on the continent, and the harpy eagle. We climb to the cold for the only bear in all of South America, drop into a cave for the echolocating oilbird, and reach the tepuis — sky islands where carnivorous plants hunt, frogs skip the tadpole entirely, tarantulas fire clouds of stinging hair, and a fingernail-sized pebble toad escapes by curling into a stone and bouncing down the mountain. We witness the Catatumbo lightning that breaks the sky two hundred and sixty nights a year, and finally the reason for it all: the Orinoco crocodile, a true seven-meter monster and the largest predator the continent has ever known, of which fewer adults remain in the wild than of almost any famous animal on Earth — a giant hiding in plain sight, on a sandbank of a single river, guarding its nest in a country that forgot it exists.
