Johnnie Taylor was born in Crawfordsville, Arkansas and performed in gospel groups as a youngster. He sang with the Gospel group known as The Highway QC's, vocal group The Five Echoes and replaced his friend, Sam Cooke, as the lead singer of The Soul Stirrers in 1957. He recorded on a number of record labels: some were Chance, Stax, Derby, Columbia, Beverly Glen, Malaco and SAR. Johnny Taylor had 21 songs charted nationally on Billboard. His biggest, DISCO LADY on Columbia #10281 charted in April 1976 for 19 weeks and reached #1 and stayed #1 for 4 weeks. His other smash hit was WHO'S MAKING LOVE, Stax #0009 which charted in December 1968 for 14 weeks and reached #5. There are 3 icons involved with this recording besides Johnnie Taylor who was known as "The Philosopher of Soul." SAR was Sam Cooke's record label. "NEVER, NEVER" was written by Ed Townsend of "FOR YOU LOVE" fame and Never, Never was arranged & conducted by Rene' Hall. It doesn't get any better than that.
