Just when residents of New York had prepared for the holiday, the festive spirit was suddenly shattered. At precisely 10:33 in the morning on December 16th, 1960, residents in the New York Borough of Staten Island heard a distant noise. In the moments that followed debris fell from the sky, raining down from the clouds. Less than two minutes later a passenger plane was recorded to have crashed over in Brooklyn. The worst air disaster ever recorded at that time had just unfolded in the sky above their homes. This is a story that has long since been forgotten or perhaps it's rather been relegated to the shadows of the many stories than have been told about New York City. Many New Yorkers today have never heard of what became known by those who still remember it, as the Park Slope Air Disaster. Two of the largest planes that 1960 could afford collided in midair, and one of them was not where they should have been. This is that story. You can ask questions of, what lessons were learnt from this critical moment in aviation history. But if you ask me, a further question to ask would be, shouldn’t action have already been taken to prevent this exact tragedy. My viewer, come with me, let me tell you all about this tragic event. Let’s cross the ocean and take to the skies together and unpack what happened on that fateful day. #aviation #christmas #america
