An AI answer feels weightless, but every response draws on copper, spinning turbines and real megawatts. This video follows AI's hidden power bill from your screen back to the data centers now pushing America's electricity grid to its physical limits. The International Energy Agency projects global data center electricity use could reach about 950 terawatt-hours by 2030, nearly double today's level. In the United States, data centers are expected to drive roughly half of all net growth in electricity demand this decade, which ends twenty years of flat consumption. Utilities that once planned for slow, predictable growth are now getting requests for single campuses that need more than one thousand megawatts, about the output of a full nuclear reactor. We look at why chips keep getting more efficient while total demand keeps climbing. The answer goes back to Jevons Paradox and to the shift from occasional chatbot prompts to AI agents that run all day and night. Next we zoom in on geography. EPRI scenarios show data centers could use 9 to 17 percent of US electricity by 2030, and in Virginia that share could reach 39 to 57 percent of the state's generation. Texas, Georgia, Ohio and Arizona are seeing similar surges in requests. Then we get to the bottleneck. A data center goes up in about two years, but connecting it to the grid can take more than five. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory counts over two thousand gigawatts of generation and storage waiting in interconnection queues. On top of that come transformer backlogs, disputes over rights-of-way and ten-year planning cycles. Finally, we cover the tech industry's turn to nuclear power, including the deal to restart Three Mile Island Unit 1 as the Crane Clean Energy Center to supply Microsoft. We also look at cooling, who ends up paying for new grid infrastructure, and what a fairer deal between data centers and the grid could look like.
