"Tests show a slow, gradual deterioration in the functioning of his vital organs ... His state has not changed. He's still in critical condition, and his life is in danger," Tel Hashomer hospital director Zeev Rotstein said. According to reports, Sharon suffered his first mild ischemic stroke on December 18, 2005, when he was hospitalized for two days and was given a blood thinner as a treatment. The use of blood thinners caused much controversy in the case, ABC News reported, as Israeli journalists charged that the drug's use likely exacerbated the stroke. In 2006, Sharon suffered a second, major hemorrhagic stroke and has remained in coma since. A year ago specialists said he responded to pictures of his family by showing significant brain activity in an MRI scan. However, reports state that Sharon was taken into intensive care a month ago. His health then stabilised, but started worsening since last Wednesday due to serious kidney problems after undergoing surgery, Israeli media reported. Several vital organs are also now failing. According to the director of the Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv, Sharon is not receiving dialysis treatment, as it is not recommended for a patient with multiple organ failure. In recent weeks, he has been administered antibiotics for infections that caused his condition to deteriorate. Only a miracle could stop the decline, he told journalists. Sharon's two sons, Gilad and Omri, and other close family members were at his bedside as doctors warned he may die soon.
