Internet should not become a VIP lane. Airtel has introduced network slicing in India, where a separate part of the mobile network is being prioritised for postpaid users under Airtel Priority, while regular prepaid users continue on the normal network. The concern is simple: should better speed and connectivity depend on whether you use prepaid or postpaid? Postpaid plans usually start around ₹450, while prepaid 1GB plans are available around ₹299. In crowded areas, priority users may get better internet while others are left with whatever network remains. And in India, crowded areas are everywhere. We tested this in our office with the same phone and same location. The postpaid connection showed around 20–25% better speed than prepaid. This raises an important net neutrality question. Internet should be equal for everyone, not divided between premium users and regular users. TRAI is reportedly checking whether Airtel’s move violates this principle. Reports also suggest Jio may bring something similar soon. Affordable internet changed India. It helped students, creators, small businesses and common people grow. It should not become a paid priority system.
