They drove a custom motorcycle down stone steps — right into a $500,000 camera. During filming of The Dark Knight Rises on August 5, 2011, Catwoman’s stunt double rode the heavy Batpod down the steps of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. You see, director Christopher Nolan refused to use fake CGI. He insisted on using rare 70mm IMAX film cameras, which produce images ten times larger than standard film. But these bulky 500-pound rigs had to sit just inches from the action. At the same time, the Batpod had no handlebars, requiring the rider to steer entirely with their shoulders. As the stunt rider accelerated down the stairs, she lost control of the heavy front wheel. The motorcycle slammed straight into the IMAX lens — shattering the multi-hundred-thousand-dollar rig into pieces. Nobody was injured, but the half-million-dollar shot was completely ruined and never made it into the movie. Would you sacrifice a half-million-dollar camera just to avoid using CGI? - - - ⚠️No copyright infringement intended. Content is shared for educational and commentary purposes only.
