On October 15, 2026, at the SpaceX rocket test site in McGregor, Texas, Tesla unveiled the second-generation Roadster in a way nobody expected. An unmanned, remote-controlled prototype drove up a curved ramp, hung upside down like a fly on a ceiling, spun while inverted, fired jets of cold nitrogen gas, flipped through the air, and landed on its wheels. Minutes later it launched over a moving line of Teslas — a Semi, Cybertruck, Cybercab, Model Y, and Model 3 — rolled in midair, and came down in a cloud of nitrogen. Elon Musk summed it up in seven words: "Well, it worked. Flying cars are real." The car achieves its ceiling grip through four fans built from the same high-voltage compressor motor Tesla uses in its heat pumps, each pulling about 20 kilowatts, combined with deployable rubber-and-nylon skirts that seal the underside and suck the car onto the surface — inspired by the white Lotus Esprit from the 1977 James Bond film that Musk owns. For the jump, a 200-liter carbon-fiber pressure vessel holds nitrogen at up to 10,000 psi, feeding cold-gas thrusters developed jointly with SpaceX that produce over 80 kilonewtons of thrust for about 5 seconds per fill, with refill times currently at 6 to 7 hours and a 30-minute target. The rear wing is moved by Optimus robot leg actuators, and the entire aerodynamic package — front wing elements tilting to 80 degrees, deployable barge boards, and an active hood vent — generates up to 2 g of downforce above 200 mph. The powertrain is rear-wheel drive only with two motors producing over 1 megawatt (1,341 hp) and 1,400 Nm of torque, more than the three motors in a Model S Plaid, fed by a bespoke 4680 battery pack with aluminum cans, double-sided cooling, and 500+ kW charging. Three trims will be offered: the Performance (road-ready, under 1.6 seconds 0-60, 210 mph top speed, $50,000 reservation), the Thrust (race-ready with four rear thrusters, under a second 0-60, 230 mph, $250,000 reservation), and the Rocket (air-ready with 10 thrusters and 600 liters of nitrogen, roughly half a second 0-60, 383 mph being engineered, invite-only for private tracks). The car weighs just under 1,700 kg, a deliberate choice by VP of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy, who noted that driver's cars are not 2,000 kilos. Production is set for 2028 at Giga Texas, and Musk acknowledged that regulators have not yet written rules for a car with cold-gas thrusters — the rules will follow the machine.
