In 1996, Everlast Toys released this plastic bath bank, and most people assumed it ran on hidden microchips and small electric motors. If you sliced through the blue polystyrene shell, you wouldn't find a single wire or battery. Instead, engineers at Everlast Industrial—a Hong Kong manufacturing house founded in 1971—solved a complex kinematic problem using pure mechanical energy. Winding the side key compresses a high-carbon steel spiral mainspring, storing potential energy. This energy is held back by a tiny molded lever called a sear. The moment you place a coin down and press the trigger, that downward force mechanically dislodges the sear from its catch. Instantly, stored rotational torque dumps into a miniature four-bar linkage. This linkage translates rotational force into a flat, horizontal sweeping kick. In under two-tenths of a second, the foot shoots forward, hooks the raised rim of the coin, and drags it across a spring-loaded trapdoor into the internal vault. Because the mold was calibrated strictly for the thickness of pennies and nickels, larger modern coins would jam the tolerances, causing the brittle plastic gear teeth to strip under the spring's violent torque. This device proves that before cheap silicon chips dominated product design, automated movement didn’t require lines of code or electricity. It relied purely on geometry and physics—a mechanical principle modern engineers still rely on today to build fail-safe systems that never lose power.
