"Another marvelous discovery from the Motown vaults, The Marvelettes singing "The Train That's Bringing My Baby." It's really gratifying to hear how far the young ladies' harmonies have come since "Please Mr. Postman." That was a trademark of Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter productions. Making full use of actual group members in the background and using always-interesting and creative vocal arrangements. Gladys Horton (as always) shows off her incredible knack for phrasing and sounding much wiser than her young years. The Marvelettes strength was in making any tune sound like it was recorded in the midst of a party. On the uptempo songs, you could imagine these girls were having such a great time and inviting the listener to to the party as well. Listen to the break where Gladys excitedly relates the train bringing her baby back is pulling into the station- her friends all share in the joy with whoops and hollers as the music track kicks into even higher gear. Note that the musical arrangement is quite different from most of the Marvelettes output up to this point. To my ears, this has the same sort of sophisticated, Big Band/R&B sound that marked Kim Weston's recordings. The Funk Brothers sound was growing ever tighter and almost freakishly astonishing and this performance is markedly more adult than the material Motown was successful with at this point. Also, we're hearing the beginnings of one of Motown's most-recognizable musical signatures, the great Mike Terry's saxophone work. His saxophone phrases comment on the action throughout and always add a sort of subliminal element to just about every great Motown record from the 60's. A thanks to cov11 for bringing Mr. Terry's work to attention. Obviously, there was a feeling that the group was ready for a change in musical direction and Mickey Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter deserve all the credit for working extensively with the group in maturing their sound. #motown #oldies #motown #themarvelettes #womenofmotown
