Twenty-three seconds. That's how long it took to crash a 737 on purpose. Four years on, China still hasn't released the cockpit voice recording. China Eastern Airlines Flight MU5735 was a Boeing 737-800, registration B-1791, on a routine two-hour service from Kunming (KMG / ZPPP) to Guangzhou (CAN / ZGGG) on 21 March 2022. The aircraft entered a near-vertical dive from cruise and struck a hillside in Guangxi. On 1 May 2026, the United States NTSB released a 33-page combined recorder report through a FOIA request filed by a Chinese citizen — the first hard data the public has seen in four years. The flight data tells one part of the story. The cockpit voice recording, still in Beijing, would tell the rest. What you'll learn: - What the flight data recorder shows in the final 23 seconds — fuel cutoff, autopilot disconnect, control column input - Why the 737's guarded fuel switches mean these inputs cannot have been accidental - What the data cannot say — and why the cockpit voice recorder is the missing piece - How a FOIA request to a foreign agency unlocked data China's own regulator has withheld for four years Chapters: 00:00 Intro 00:40 What we know so far 01:51 Setting the scene 02:58 What happened 04:29 What should have happened 05:43 Where the investigation stands 07:09 Outro About this channel: The Tower Seat is an aviation-incident channel covering accidents, near-misses, and the systems behind how flying actually works. Each video is built from primary sources — official preliminary reports, FlightRadar24 replays, LiveATC archives — and explained in plain language. No drama-bait, no speculation before the official record, no manufactured outrage. Some videos draw directly on the air traffic control side of the story when that's where the analytical lift is. Others are about the aircraft, the crew, the conditions, or the regulatory backdrop. The ATC angle shows up when it adds something the public reporting missed — not on every video.
