SOFT FOCUS REALISM Garazi Izar | The Sacred Interference Time is strange because it never appears to be doing very much while it's doing absolutely everything. Faces change. Temperaments change. Convictions change. What once seemed permanent becomes temporary in retrospect, and things we barely noticed sometimes return later carrying considerably more weight than we originally gave them. I've been thinking about that lately—the peculiar relationship between time, recognition and imagination. Not nostalgia exactly. More like encountering something new and, at the same time, feeling that you somehow already know it. Maybe that's why the idea of shifting timelines is so irresistible to the imagination. Not necessarily as physics, and certainly not because every peculiar Tuesday requires a quantum explanation. I mean it more playfully than that. What if reality is less fixed than our habits make it appear? At the beginning of an awakening, unusual perceptions can feel enormous. Something strange catches your attention. It startles you. Suddenly you're noticing interruptions in patterns you previously considered solid. A coincidence feels louder. Something familiar looks unfamiliar. For a moment, certainty develops a hairline crack. It can be mind-blowing. It can also freak you out. Eventually, you learn not to be destabilized by every unusual perception and experience. Wonder is valuable, but losing your footing every time something inexplicable happens is exhausting. Maturity doesn't require killing the mystery. You just become more comfortable not knowing exactly what something was. You notice it. You wonder about it. Maybe you laugh about it. And sometimes you just leave the thing alone. Somewhere between dismissing everything unusual and assigning cosmic significance to absolutely everything, there's a lot of room for imagination. Maybe that's what I mean by a glitch. Not proof that reality has malfunctioned. Not an announcement from another dimension. Just a little interruption in certainty. Something that makes the mind entertain another possibility. I've always loved landscape paintings for a similar reason. I can look at one long enough to become absorbed in it, almost trance-like. It's not necessarily about escape. I like the feeling of the mind being able to wander somewhere without the body having to go along for the trip. Imagination has always been our least expensive form of transportation. And maybe that's part of the appeal of quantum shifting, alternate timelines and parallel realities. Underneath all the terminology is something pretty simple: What else could this be? What else could I be? What changes when I look at the same reality differently? You don't have to believe every possibility to enjoy thinking about it. A while ago, I kept a small piece of imagery that I wasn't even sure mattered. It came from a Sagittarius Short I'd made. I liked the colors and the strange landscape. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I felt it would play into something more important later, but I didn't think much more about it.h Then, much later, something remarkably similar showed up again. That got my attention. I don't need to turn it into prophecy. Maybe intuition was involved. Maybe memory was. Maybe imagination quietly keeps its own inventory and pulls things back out when we're finally ready to recognize them. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Fine. Coincidence is allowed to be interesting too. We sometimes ruin perfectly good mysteries by interrogating them to death. What does it mean? Why did it happen? What's the message? Maybe sometimes the answer is simply: not yet. Keep the image. Keep the thought. Keep the strange little thing you can't quite explain. Time has a funny way of changing the context around something. What looked insignificant under one set of circumstances can suddenly make perfect sense under another. Reality doesn't always have to change. Sometimes we do. And suddenly we're looking at something we've seen before as if we're seeing it for the first time.
