In 2019, I invited Constantine Koukias (AUS/NETH) to write PRIMORDIAL, inspired by the Ediacara fossil site in the Flinders Ranges. As a composer of experimental opera, I knew Constantine would bring his unique and expansive vision to this work. We toured the Flinders Ranges fossil site in September 2019, and shortly afterwards, I spent long hours in a piano studio in Amsterdam with Constantine to create prepared sounds on the piano. These sounds were then manipulated by Mischa Duncan te Pas to create the tape that merges with the piano score. The score is deceptive; although it may seem freely improvised at first glance, Constantine's directions are precise in realising the choreography of the performer, which is inherent to the directions and notation of the musical score. Since 2021, I have performed PRIMORDIAL twelve times across the globe - in Amsterdam, Serbia, Athens, Perth, and Mona Foma Hobart 2023. In May 2021, I toured PRIMORDIAL to regional South Australia, performing outdoors at remote locations, many of which were the site of the ancient inland sea that gave life to the Ediacara in the Flinders Ranges. PRIMORDIAL speaks to us of the deep earth. Audience members listened with open ears to this experimental soundscape: in Whyalla, a geologist recounted the earth's timeline in detail according to the sounds he had just heard in the performance; in Port Augusta, an Adnyamathanha Elder expressed her desire to use PRIMORDIAL as the background to her story; and in Blinman, a mine worker was spellbound to hear the sounds of the earth so interpreted. It was a privilege to tour with Constantine through Europe; after each performance, Constantine added more nuance and subtlety to the score, enhancing the music and speaking to my strength as a performer. PRIMORDIAL is a work that I will continue to perform for a long time, as it has an extraordinary depth and scope that draws in audiences. As one audience member said to me after a performance in Blinman, remote SA, "I was the Earth." Constantine's unique and expansive vision is such that he has devised a film project to perform PRIMORDIAL at all of the Ediacara fossil sites, some 12 or 13, around the world, ending in 2029.
