Join the Discord: https://discord.com/invite/dannyjones Daniel Everett learned the Pirahã language so he could tell an Amazonian community about Jesus. They wanted to know what Jesus looked like and whether Everett had ever seen him. When he admitted he had never met Jesus or anyone who had, their questions exposed a problem with the message he was trying to share. In this conversation with Danny Jones, Everett recalls why the Pirahã showed so little interest in becoming Christians and eventually asked him to stop talking about Jesus altogether. Everett describes men visiting his house to say they liked him, valued his medical help, and enjoyed his company. They also made clear that they wanted to live by their own customs. His rules about drinking and sex sounded American to them, especially when they compared those rules with the Brazilians they knew. He explains how their preference for personal freedom clashed with his account of a God everyone had to obey. The Pirahã had contact with outsiders and had seen cities. Everett describes people who actively preferred their own way of life and saw little reason to exchange it for the beliefs he brought. The discussion also examines Everett's changing interpretation of Pirahã stories about unusual beings in the jungle. He argues that his Christian background led him to read religious meanings into accounts he later understood differently. He then describes their response to death, the practical demands of mourning in a hunting community, and the contrast with missionaries he knew who feared dying. These observations form part of his explanation for why his attempt to teach Christianity failed. They also show how learning a language forced him to reconsider assumptions about what other people needed, believed, or wanted from him.
