In a world obsessed with optimisation, deadlines and deliverables, what happens to our ability to dream? In this powerful and urgent TEDx talk, artist and creative strategist Mollie Balshaw challenges the modern myth of productivity as the highest good; and invites us to reclaim imagination as a tool for collective liberation. Drawing on their lived experience as a working-class queer artist, Mollie unpacks how systems of inequality benefit from keeping us too tired, too busy, and too afraid to imagine better. Through the lens of divergent and convergent thinking, they show how creativity isn’t a soft skill - it’s a survival strategy. One we urgently need. This talk is for anyone who’s ever felt burned out, boxed in, or like they’ve had the creativity kicked out of them. If you’ve ever questioned whether you’re allowed to imagine a different life - or a different world - this talk will remind you: your imagination is not a distraction. It’s a blueprint. Mollie Balshaw is a curator, artist, and co-founder of Short Supply - a trailblazing arts organisation championing early-career artists from working-class and marginalised backgrounds across the UK. Based in Manchester, Mollie has earned a national reputation for challenging the centralisation and gatekeeping of the art world, building grassroots networks that empower creatives to thrive outside traditional systems. Through Short Supply, they’ve delivered high-impact exhibitions, mentoring programmes, and partnerships with major institutions, all while keeping artists at the heart of every decision. A vocal advocate for autonomy in creative careers, Mollie’s work interrogates the structures that shape access, opportunity, and success in the arts. Their writing, public speaking, and programming confront the myth of meritocracy and push for a more equitable, self-determined future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
