"Rethinking Human Sensorimotor Performance: Beyond Engineering Assumptions and Towards a Fluid Understanding" Madhur Mangalam is an assistant Professor in the Department of Biomechanics at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. His MorphoTalk discusses human sensorimotor performance from an embodied perspective, by challenging 4 core research assumptions: (i) bones serve as a rigid framework, supporting soft tissues and enabling lever-like movement through skeletal muscle activation; (ii) the movement system is decomposable into quasi-independent components or subsystems, which can be studied in isolation; (iii) the central nervous system is representational, capable of sensing and predicting the state of each component; and (iv) physiology and performance are ergodic, allowing generalizable inferences across individuals. Madhur will propose instead that: (i) the movement system is a body-wide tensegrity structure, with compression and tension elements in the balance based on local compression and continuous tension; (ii) multiplicative interactions across space and time scales defy decomposition using established statistical formalisms requiring the Gaussian bounds; (iii) the central nervous system is non-representational and instead is characterized by power-law driven cascading processes spreading across the brain, body, and context; and (iv) sensorimotor physiology and performance routinely breaks ergodicity due to non-Gaussianity and nonlinearities arising from multiplicative interactions, making generalizations from group-level findings to individuals problematic. To avoid falling into a reductionist understanding of sensorimotor performance, Madhur concludes his talk by proposing to adopt alternative approaches—such as biotensegrity, cascade dynamical formalisms, ecological psychology, and nonlinear descriptors—to study healthy human sensorimotor performance and its breakdown in disease through a new lens.
