The Dodge Big Horn is one of the most striking – and most notorious – conventional trucks of trucking's golden age. Debuting in 1973, the Big Horn paired a massive stainless steel grille, a long powerful-looking hood, and swooping fenders with a surprisingly small, narrow cab that dated all the way back to 1948. That tiny cab was cramped and noisy, lacked power steering, and had barely any firewall separating the driver from engine heat. Depending on spec, the Big Horn came with a Cummins diesel or a Detroit Diesel two-stroke, with base fleet trucks making as little as 238 horsepower – barely enough, by one former driver's account, to get out of its own way. Ironically, for a truck built with weight-saving aluminum components throughout, its iconic ram hood ornament alone weighed a hefty 14 pounds. Dodge only built 261 Big Horns between 1973 and 1975 before walking away from the Class 8 truck market for good. Remarkably, around 105 of them are still known to survive today, kept alive by a devoted fan base of collectors and truck show regulars. If you love vintage American trucks and the strange, beautiful failures that became legends, this story is for you. 👍 Team drivers wanted!
