Springs Charter Schools has a special vision to personalize education for our students and to empower them to be independent life-long learners. This can be hard to accomplish in a class of 32! In order to make this happen in our classrooms, one of our signature practices is to employ a co-teaching model by pairing a teacher with an Assistant Classroom Educator for the entire day. These Assistant Classroom Educators, who we call ACEs, become an integral part of the learning experience for the students in their classrooms After we had been implementing our ACE program for several years, we began to notice that many of our ACEs had bachelor's degrees and for whatever reason had changed careers to become an ACE or were stalled on their journey to become a teacher. We knew these ACEs would be terrific teachers, and so we explored the ways we could help them follow their dreams while helping us develop fantastic teachers for Springs! We found a perfect partner in Eastern Oregon University. ACEs who complete our program will receive their master's degree in education from EOU and both their Oregon and California state teaching credentials. We help our candidates find the best grants and financing to pay for the program, and we support the process by providing release time, textbooks, and a full salary throughout the program, including during student teaching. During year 1 our ACE to Teacher candidates work in the classroom, get professional development and ensure that all university prerequisites are met. In July after their first year, candidates begin their coursework and observations. In January they start student teaching and they complete all requirements by June.
