In the pre-SUV world, if you wanted to pack the whole family in the car, and load up with bags, bikes and equipment, the obvious choice of vehicle was the estate car. With big squared off boots and plenty of space inside, the humble estate versions of saloons and hatchbacks have been ferrying families around for decades. Nowadays, it's a different story. With their popularity on the wane, and SUVs on the rise, manufacturers are dropping estate models - even Volvo (a brand synonymous with the estate car) has dropped all estate vehicles from its line-up. We wanted to know if the manufacturers were making the right choice and if the estate was still a viable alternative to the ever-popular SUV. So, we recruited a family with a very active lifestyle, packed up all their gear, and headed out to test which car would be best for them, the BMW 3 Series Touring or the Audi Q5.
