In the late 1980s, General Electric tested a radical engine called the GE36 Unducted Fan. Instead of hiding its fan blades inside a casing like a normal jet engine, it used two rows of large, curved composite blades spinning in opposite directions on the outside of the engine. Mounted on the back of a McDonnell Douglas MD-80 test aircraft, it flew at near jet speeds while burning roughly 30 percent less fuel than the engines of the day. The design had been driven by the oil crises of the 1970s. But by the time it flew, oil prices had collapsed, so the savings mattered far less. The exposed blades were also very loud, raising concerns about cabin noise and airport noise rules, and airlines were unwilling to pay to certify such an unusual engine. The idea did not disappear completely. Engine makers are now studying open rotor designs again as part of the push for more fuel efficient flight. ___________________________________ This video is presented for educational and historical purposes only.
