People go to concerts to escape, not for a heavy-handed lecture. Yet Macklemore gets a 5-star Guardian review for his political sermon, while Musk gets slammed. If you say all the approved woke talking points, legacy media will always carry your water. In today’s Friday Focus: Macklemore’s Woke Escalation. You may have heard of American rapper Ben Haggerty, better known by his stage name Macklemore. Recently, he made headlines—not for his music, but for getting dropped from Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour. Macklemore was serving as the opening act when he decided to soapbox on stage and shout “Free Palestine”, running head-first into Sheeran’s strictly apolitical stance. Sheeran is famous for keeping politics out of his concerts and focusing purely on the music—an approach I honestly think a lot more artists should stick to. After all, people go to concerts to chill out and escape, not to get a heavy-handed lecture on geopolitics. Macklemore’s woke views aren’t particularly new. Over the last couple of decades, he’s made a whole career out of rapping about his own white privilege. Don’t worry, The Guardian was quick to call him out back in 2016 with the headline: “Macklemore raps about White Privilege – while reaping its rewards.” They helpfully noted that he only received his Grammy because he was white. Because obviously, it couldn’t possibly be that people liked his music or that he holds all the “correct” political views—no, it was purely his skin colour. Either way, while he continuously apologises for his privilege, he has zero issue continuing to bank cheques off it. And after getting booted from Sheeran’s tour, he immediately kicked off his own tour. Can you guess what it’s called? The Free Palestine Tour. Groundbreaking originality right there. At his first concert back, he declared to the crowd that being a human being right now “is not complicated” and “is not political”. But instead of keeping it simple, he rolled out an entire political manifesto. He shouted: “Free Palestine, free Sudan, free Congo, Lebanon, Haiti,” and even squeezed in a shoutout to illegal immigrants afraid of U.S. immigration enforcement. At another show, he laid out his real agenda, admitting: “A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine!” The Guardian, always eager to applaud the right kind of virtue-signalling, declared: “Macklemore’s Free Palestine tour review – a triumph of a show.” Unsurprisingly, they slapped a full five stars on it. Never mind the music or whether any of the songs were actually good—the political posture was flawless, so five stars it is. Just for contrast, consider how they treated Elon Musk’s recent AI film project. They headlined: “Elon Musk’s AI Odyssey review – the dullest, most pointless riposte possible to Christopher Nolan’s brilliant epic.” One star. They even published another article calling it: “Meaningless as a laptop screensaver.” Obviously, when The Guardian reviews art, the quality of the work isn’t the point—it’s whether the creator holds the correct ideological membership card. Either way, Macklemore has proven that in today’s culture, righteous posturing is far more important than actual talent. If you say all the approved woke talking points, the legacy media will always have your back. MUSIC Allégro by Emmit Fenn
