In late February 2000, a Guatemalan citizen was killed by the Belizean military along the two countries’ disputed border. This sparked off a diplomatic incident, which eventually saw the Organization of American States step in, establishing a 1.2 mile (2 kilometer) wide “adjacency zone.” Despite tensions, Belize and Guatemala would later agree, in 2008, to submit the issue to the International Court of Justice, asking the court to give a definitive ruling on the territorial dispute, which goes far beyond the border in question. In fact, Guatemala to this day continues to maintain its long-standing claim to roughly 53% of the Belizean territory, including parts of the Cayo and Belize districts, along with the entirety of the Stann Creek and Toledo districts – well north of the internationally accepted border along the Sarstoon River. Some, however, advocate for more, suggesting Guatemala should annex the entirety of Belize, adding an additional 8,867 square miles (22,970 square kilometers) of territory and giving us a “Greater Guatemala.” At the core of the Belizean–Guatemalan territorial dispute is a colonial era treaty, which, in effect, divided the Americas between the Kingdom of Portugal and a medieval polity known as the Crown of Castile.
