A massive rock wall rises above an epic mountain road in western Hubei. This immersive 4K drive begins at the Enshi Grand Canyon P2 Outdoor Parking Lot, follows G242 through Tunbao Township, passes Tuanbao Town in Lichuan, joins the famous G318 and finishes at Chaodongyan—widely known locally as Central China’s highest cliff. The 36.7-kilometer journey climbs and descends between 840 and 1,485 meters. Beyond the main Enshi Grand Canyon attractions, the scenery shifts into the everyday mountain landscape of Enshi: forested ridges, layered limestone peaks, hillside farms, traditional villages, small towns and long sequences of curves. Cloudy weather softens the distant mountains while emphasizing the scale of the cliffs and valleys. Enshi Grand Canyon and Tenglongdong Cave form a UNESCO Global Geopark. Exposed strata range from the Cambrian to the Cretaceous, while Permian and Triassic carbonate rocks were reshaped by tectonic uplift, river erosion and long-term dissolution. These processes created deep gorges, sinkholes, fissures, stone-pillar forests, caves, disappearing streams and extensive underground river systems. Qixingzhai, the Yunlong River fissure and the slender Yizhuxiang pillar are iconic formations near the starting area. Tuanbao is particularly noted for its karst sinkholes and enclosed mountain basins. After joining G318, the road approaches Chaodongyan. This is not a single isolated peak but an immense cliff wall stretching for more than ten kilometers. It rises from the Qingjiang valley at roughly 430 meters to elevations near 1,579 meters, forming a natural stone barrier between Enshi and Lichuan. G318 crosses this obstacle through the Chaodongyan Tunnel, where cliff faces, tunnel portals, river valleys and winding highway sections create the defining scenery of the drive. The difficult terrain has also shaped local life. Villages beneath Chaodongyan once faced severe transport and drinking-water challenges. A remarkable cliffside water-diversion project later carried mountain spring water to hundreds of residents. Modern roads, bridges and tunnels have improved access, yet the route still passes traditional farms and communities closely connected to the mountains. The transport corridor continues to evolve. In February 2026, the Enshi Grand Canyon West toll station near Tuanbao opened for trial operation, directly connecting the Shanghai–Chongqing Expressway with G242 and the scenic-area road network. A proposed Enshi Grand Canyon branch expressway, approximately 20.06 kilometers long with an estimated investment of 4.3 billion yuan, is still progressing through planning and route-selection work in the complex Wuling Mountains. The Qingjiang basin is also an important cultural homeland of the Tujia, Miao and Dong peoples. Traditional stilt houses were designed for steep slopes and limited flat land. Tujia brocade, folk songs, the hand-waving dance and the internationally known Dragon Boat Tune from Lichuan remain powerful symbols of the region.
