Try it out today! After Tennessee failed to execute Christa Pike, Bruce Rivers explains why he does not support the death penalty and asks the question the state has not answered: what now? On September 30, 2026, Tennessee tried to execute Christa Gail Pike, 50, at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. She was convicted in 1996 of the January 12, 1995 torture-murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. Pike was 18 at the time. A Sixth Circuit stay was vacated the same day by the U.S. Supreme Court, and the state went forward that night with two doses of pentobarbital. Lawyers and witnesses say IV access failed, veins blew, and Pike was still breathing and had a heartbeat after both doses. She was taken to a Nashville hospital in critical condition. By early October, her lawyers said she had woken up and was being treated for complications, including severe arm swelling. Gov. Bill Lee ordered a third-party review and paused the remaining execution set for 2026. Pike’s lawyers want the sentence commuted and all evidence from the attempt preserved. The department says it followed the approved protocol. In this episode, Bruce Rivers explains why he opposes capital punishment, what the failed lethal injection reveals about the practice, and what Pike’s sentence, clemency fight, and any future attempt look like from here.
