St. Clair's Defeat, also known as the Battle of the Wabash and the Battle of a Thousand Slain, was the biggest Native American victory over the United States Army and the worst defeat the US Army ever suffered at Native American hands. On November 4, 1791, near present-day Fort Recovery, Ohio, a Native American confederacy led by Little Turtle (Miami), Blue Jacket (Shawnee) and Buckongahelas (Lenape) surrounded and destroyed General Arthur St. Clair's army at dawn. Around 630 American soldiers were killed, nearly three times as many as died with George Armstrong Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, and about a quarter of the entire United States Army was lost in three hours. This full-length Native American history documentary tells the Northwest Indian War (Little Turtle's War, 1785 to 1795) from the Native American perspective. It begins with the 1783 Treaty of Paris, when Britain handed the United States the Ohio Country and the Northwest Territory without consulting the Native nations who lived there. It follows American settlers crossing the Ohio River on flatboats, the founding of Marietta and Cincinnati, Fort Washington, and the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. It explores the Western Confederacy of the Miami, Shawnee, Lenape (Delaware), Wyandot (Huron), Ottawa, Ojibwe, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Mingo and Cherokee, and daily life at Kekionga, the Miami capital on the site of modern Fort Wayne, Indiana. The war unfolds through Harmar's Defeat in 1790, when Josiah Harmar's army was beaten near Kekionga, and St. Clair's march north from Fort Washington through Fort Hamilton and Fort Jefferson, with gout, desertion, Kentucky militia and hundreds of camp followers. It shows Little Turtle's battle plan: weeks of scouting, the wait for dawn, and the targeting of officers and artillery crews, ending in the 29-mile retreat to Fort Jefferson. Former captive William Wells, Little Turtle's son-in-law, fought on the Native side. The aftermath shaped the United States. President George Washington's fury, Secretary of War Henry Knox, the first congressional investigation in American history, and the first claim of executive privilege all came out of this battle. So did the creation of the Legion of the United States under General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, the building of Fort Recovery on the battlefield, the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1794, the British Fort Miamis closing its gates, the Jay Treaty, and the Treaty of Greenville in 1795, which gave the United States most of Ohio. The story continues to Little Turtle's meetings with Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Tecumseh, Indian removal, and the Miami, Shawnee, Delaware and Wyandotte nations today. Finally, it asks why the greatest Native American victory in US history is missing from textbooks, and how Custer's Last Stand came to overshadow it. A calm, narrated long-form history documentary for sleep, study or relaxing. It covers early American history, the American frontier, the Indian Wars, Ohio history, Indiana history, 18th century America and Native American warfare.
