A ₹1.86 crore property file disappeared… then the bank paid the price. A bank losing your property papers sounds like a nightmare. But for one man, that nightmare ended with a ₹25 lakh compensation order against one of India’s biggest banks. After taking a loan against his ₹1.86 crore property, the original documents were handed over to the bank for “safe custody.” The bank later bundled those papers with other files and couriered them to Hyderabad. Somewhere between dispatch and delivery, a 10 kg packet mysteriously became 7 kg and the original property documents vanished. The bank blamed the courier company. The courier company practically washed its hands off the matter. Even the RBI Ombudsman route resulted in only a tiny compensation compared to the actual damage and stress involved. The matter finally reached the consumer commission, where the bank was ordered to reconstruct all documents, pay ₹25 lakh compensation, bear litigation costs, and face further penalties for delays. Even RBI later clarified through its 2023 circular that if banks fail to return original property documents within 30 days, customers can claim ₹5,000 per day as penalty.
