This morning's message at Kinsman Baptist Church, Geelong was a timely reminder that in a world of restless striving, God calls His people to a settled and thankful heart. "But godliness with contentment is great gain." (1 Timothy 6:6) Paul's reasoning in 1 Timothy 6 is wonderfully simple. We brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. Everything we possess is held only for a time. Therefore, "having food and raiment let us be therewith content." Contentment is not resignation or complacency. It is the fruit of trusting that God has supplied what we truly need, and that our greatest treasure is not found in the things of this world. The warning that follows is equally sobering. Paul does not condemn money itself, but the desire to be rich—the restless craving that can take hold of the human heart. Those who set their affections on wealth "fall into temptation and a snare," bringing great harm upon themselves. "The love of money is the root of all evil," and some, in pursuing it, "have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." Discontentment is never harmless. Left unchecked, it slowly wounds the soul that entertains it. The message then turned to a question that occupies the minds of many believers: What is the will of God for my life? People can spend years anxiously searching for hidden guidance, trying to discern God's will in every major decision. Yet Scripture reveals that God's will is, in many respects, remarkably clear: "Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you." (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18) God's revealed will is first about our disposition before it is about our direction. Rejoice—always. Pray—without ceasing. Give thanks—in everything. These are not occasional acts reserved for favourable seasons, but the ongoing posture of a life surrendered to Christ. A believer who walks in joyful dependence and continual thanksgiving will often find that life's decisions fall more naturally into place, because a thankful heart is no longer driven by fear, envy, or the relentless pursuit of something more. Here these two passages converge. Contentment and thanksgiving are inseparable. The discontented heart struggles to give thanks because it is always measuring what it lacks. But the contented heart sees every good gift as coming from the Father's hand and responds with gratitude. This is why Paul could say, "godliness with contentment is great gain." It is a wealth that cannot be measured in dollars, diminished by inflation, shaken by circumstance, or stolen by thieves. It is the quiet riches of a heart at rest in God.
