Spring is slowly waking the island back up. This week, with Kelly’s parents visiting to help out with the new baby, we get right back into the rhythm of island life. On a cool, misty Newfoundland morning, Bryan and I load up the speed boat and head to the mainland to pick up a solar system for our neighbour Johnny’s cabin. With the May 24 weekend coming up, people are slowly starting to return to the island after a long winter away, getting things opened back up for summer. Once we get the solar delivered and installed, we head home to the other side of the island where the work continues. The next day, I finally hook our old gravity-fed water system back up for the season. Water runs down to the house from a small hole up in the mash that we dug out last summer, and after a bit of trial and error (and a little shagging around), we finally get the line flowing again for another season. Later on, we head next door to Patty’s for a proper Newfoundland supper — a classic Jiggs dinner with family. By the next morning the sun finally breaks through, coffee is had outside, Kelly teaches her mom how to use the old wringer washing machine, and we settle in for a quiet cup of tea and a chat about life lately.
