SpaceX reached a major milestone in the development of its Starship spacecraft Monday, successfully sending the massive rocket system into orbit around Earth for the first time. Starship 14 lifted off shortly after sunrise from Starbase, SpaceX's launch site and company-created city in South Texas near the U.S.-Mexico border. The rocket and spacecraft stand more than 400 feet tall, making the system more than 50 feet taller than the Saturn V rocket that carried NASA astronauts to the moon during the Apollo program. Spectators gathered nearby to watch the launch. "To see something that powerful go up to the stratosphere is just spectacular," one spectator said. The flight marked the first time a Starship spacecraft reached orbit around Earth. SpaceX initially planned for the spacecraft to complete six orbits at an altitude of roughly 170 miles during a mission lasting nearly 10 hours. Mission managers later decided to end the flight hours earlier than planned and bring the spacecraft home. During the mission, Starship deployed 26 next-generation Starlink satellites from its cargo bay. SpaceX says the satellites are designed to improve internet connectivity around the world. The reusable spacecraft ultimately splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near Kauai, Hawaii. The test is another step in SpaceX's effort to develop Starship into a fully reusable transportation system capable of carrying people and cargo into space. Jack Kiraly compared the spacecraft's potential to the role NASA's space shuttle played for decades. "Starship hopefully is that next iteration of rapid reusability," Kiraly said.
