My book, The Times You Grew Up With, takes you back: https://paulmcallister.store Jean, Nevada once had two casino hotels, over eleven hundred rooms, a wedding chapel, and a museum displaying the actual car Bonnie and Clyde were killed in. Its official population was zero. Not declining — zero. No one has ever permanently lived there. Built on a stretch of Interstate 15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Jean existed for one reason: to catch gamblers driving across the state line. A Syrian immigrant named Pop Simon started it with a seven-stool lunch counter in the 1940s. His son bought Bonnie and Clyde’s bullet-riddled death car for $175,000 at age twenty-two, turning a desert gas station into a roadside attraction. Corporate casino developers arrived in the late 1980s and built two hotel towers visible from the freeway. Circus Circus acquired the properties in a deal valued at over $600 million. MGM inherited them as part of a $7.9 billion buyout. Then California legalized tribal slot machines, and the customers stopped coming. The Nevada Landing was demolished in 2007. Workers found thousands of old casino chips buried in the concrete foundation. The Gold Strike was sold for $12 million, rebranded as a gas station casino, and shut down permanently during COVID. The last casino in Jean was torn down in 2024 and replaced with plans for a warehouse district. This is the story of a ghost town that was never alive — how American highway commerce, gambling money, and desert real estate created the strangest casino town in Nevada, and how one California ballot measure destroyed it.
