At just 19 years old, the Marquis de Lafayette crossed the Atlantic to fight in the American Revolution. He was a wealthy French aristocrat with almost no battlefield experience. Yet within a few years, Lafayette had been wounded at Brandywine, endured the winter at Valley Forge, built a close relationship with George Washington, returned to France to push for greater French military support, and eventually took command of American forces in Virginia. In 1781, Lafayette found himself facing one of Britain's most experienced commanders: Charles Cornwallis. Outnumbered and often short of supplies, Lafayette avoided giving Cornwallis the decisive battle he wanted. Instead, he preserved his army, shadowed the British, and helped keep Cornwallis from operating freely in Virginia. Then the opportunity came. Washington and Rochambeau marched south. Admiral de Grasse brought the French fleet into the Chesapeake. Cornwallis withdrew to Yorktown—and suddenly the British army was trapped. The Siege of Yorktown followed. American and French forces closed the land routes. French warships controlled the Chesapeake. Allied artillery battered the British defenses. Redoubts 9 and 10 fell. And on October 19, 1781, Cornwallis's army surrendered. Lafayette was only 24. His story is not simply about one young officer winning battles. It is about how a French aristocrat became a link between the American revolutionary army, French military support, and the alliance that helped make Yorktown possible. This is the story of the Marquis de Lafayette—from wealthy teenager to trusted commander at Yorktown.
